Blues Foothills report/opening weekend
« on: October 18, 2011, 02:21:29 PM »
We had a lot of fun but had a lot of trouble with the fog and rain. Opening morning arrived and we were out of the house in the dark, but also in the rain and thick fog. It cleared up after a few hours but the deer were few and far between with the weather(I assume). Eventually we started picking deer out bedded in the CRP. We found a bachelor group of bucks and my buddy's boy Kyle decided he wanted to go after them. A coyote spooked up from the grass and ran right through that group of bucks taking them all with him. A nice big 4x4 jumped up that we didn't see when we first spotted them. We did find another legal buck away from that group that didn't spook. I put the spotter on him a few hundred yards out and verified he was legal. After about a 1.5 hour stalk through the CRP, Kyle took a shot and missed him. He's 13 and has killed muley bucks in this exact spot the last 2 years. When he shot the deer jumped and mule kicked about 5 feet in the air.  He landed and wandered a few steps away and stopped. When he stopped, my buddy Dion put him down. He thought his kid wounded him and he didn't want him to wander off so he decided to drop him. It turns out Kyle hit him in the main beam just above his eye guard. I think you can see in the pic. Kyle's rear scope ring was loose at the base and thats why he missed. I spent the next 2 days hunting playing hide and seek with that 4x4 buck from the 1st group. On sunday I thought I was real close to sealing the deal and the fog blew in at the last minute and screwed me up. I waited laying in the CRP for about an hour(catching some zzz's) waiting for the fog to blow out. After an hour of waiting I decided to sneak out and come back later. I came back later trying to find the 4x4 and they were no where to be found.
All in all it was a fun weekend as usual, but it was wet and foggy all weekend and that made the hunting very difficult. I know we weren't alone because we drove over to the 40 road to check the Tucannon and it was all socked in with fog too. Tough weekend down in the Blues for the deer hunters. Lots of small deer down there again this year. The wierd thing was I didn't see a single whitetail doe or buck except for 3 does in my inlaws yard in the 3 days we were there.
Here's the buck my buddy Dion killed on saturday. I think you can see the bullet hit on his antler. Sorry I don't have any better pics. I was worried about ruining my camera with the rain so we got a cell phone pic at the truck and thats it.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield
